L’International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) reached a compromise agreement, at its third Conference on Alternative Aviation Fuels (CAAF/3), on a framework to reduce emissions from aviation fuel of 5 % by 2030.

The global aviation community gathered this week at Dubai and agreed on November 24, 2023 a next key step towards decarbonization from the sky. By adopting a new ICAO Global Framework for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), low carbon aviation fuels (LCAF) and other cleaner energies for aviation, ICAO and its Member States have agreed to strive to achieve a “ambitious global collective vision” to reduce CO2 emissions in international aviation by 5% by 2030.

Key elements of the framework include a « Vision collective » for the clean energy transition, harmonized regulatory foundations, supporting implementation initiatives and improved access to financing for related initiatives so that“no country is left behind”.

As part of this « Vision »the particular circumstances and respective capacities of each State will determine its capacity to contribute to the Vision within its own timeframes, without assigning it specific obligations or commitments in the form of emissions reduction targets. “The role of the Framework is to facilitate the scale-up of the development and deployment of SAF, LCAF and other cleaner energies for aviation globally, and primarily by providing greater clarity, consistency and predictability to all stakeholders, including those beyond the world. aviation sector »underlined the president of the ICAO Council, Salvatore Sciacchitano.

The CAO framework will support the aviation sector’s clean energy transition, necessary to achieve the current target of net zero carbon emissions from here 2050as adopted by the ICAO Assembly in 2022. It was designed to send a constant signal to public and private investors, as well as fuel producers, about the opportunities to fully support and unlock the potential of the energy transition of the aeronautics sector.
