ICC Fines Indian and Australian Cricket Teams for Low Over Rate in World Test Championship Final; Shubman Gill Penalized for Criticizing Umpiring

After the heavy defeat against Australia in the final of the World Test Championship, the Indian team suffered a setback. The ICC has suggested paying 100 percent of the match fee fine. The match referee has taken punitive action in the context of low over rate. Also, the final winners, Australia, have also been fined by the match referee. The proposal is to pay a fine of 80 percent of the match fee. Apart from these, the match referee has imposed a fine against the Indian player Shubman Gill. The match referee Richa Richardson has decided to fine the opener of the Indian team for questioning the umpiring.

Action against the Indian team after not completing five overs in the stipulated time. The Australian team has been ordered to pay a fine of 80 percent of the match fee for playing four overs less than the allotted time. According to Articles 2.22 of the ICC Disciplinary Rules, the match referee imposed fines against both the teams. As per Articles 2.22, a fine of 20 per cent of the match fee of the bowling team will be imposed if an over is still to be completed within the stipulated time. The captains of both the teams, Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins, accepted the decision of their match referee.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill will be fined 15 percent of the match fee. 115 percent of the total match fee to be paid as fine to Gill. The match referee said that Gill has committed a level 1 offense under the ICC Disciplinary Rules. The Indian team opener was fined by the match referee for criticizing the umpiring in the box. The star was also penalized with one demerit point.

Gill was caught out by Scott Boland during India’s second innings on the fourth day of the World Test Championship final. The third umpire upheld the on-field umpire’s decision, although it was clear on review that Cameron Green had hit the ground during the catch. Following this, Gill posted on Twitter criticizing the umpiring when the argument that it was not the player’s wicket was being discussed on social media. Fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena charged the Indian player. Gill committed an offense that carries a fine of up to 50 percent of the match fee and a demerit point of up to two points.
