Ice hockey: no happy ending for Salzburg against Tampere

After the 3-2 win over the Stavanger Oilers on Thursday, champions Salzburg also had to go into extra time in the second Champions League match two days later. This time, however, the Red Bulls didn’t have the happy ending they had hoped for with the 2:3 aet.

In a fast exchange of blows worth seeing, with good chances for both sides, it was not clear for a long time who would be the winner. There was only one goal in the first 40 minutes. Three seconds before the end of the first third, Ali Wukovits unexpectedly scored the opener for the home side from a man down. In the second third, either the goalkeepers or the pole or crossbar prevented further goals on both sides.

In the final section, the hosts shifted up a gear. Jyrki Jokipakka equalized for the Finns in the 42nd minute. The Hungarian Balasz Sebök increased in the 50th minute from an urge phase to 2:1 for the guests. When everything looked like a win for the Finns, Benjamin Nissner made it 2-2 after a Schneider shot just 45 seconds before the final siren.

In the three-on-three overtime, Salzburg were initially superior, but 16 seconds before the approaching shoot-out, Joona Icons scored the decisive goal for Tampere.

Stavanger leads Group E

In the second game of Group E, Stavanger had previously beaten Fribourg-Gotteron 1-0. Stavanger leads after two matchdays with four points in front of Friborg and Salzburg (3 points each), Tampere has two. Before Salzburg meets the Swiss, they now have to play the second leg away against Stavanger (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Tampere (Sunday, 3 p.m.).

On Sunday, VSV is in action in Group F for the second time. After the 0:7 against the Swedish champion Färjestad Karlstad, the Carinthians play again on foreign ice against Comarch Cracovia (Krakow).
