Icon of the Seas: The Largest Aquatic Center of the Seas to Sail in 2024

Seven swimming pools, a mini golf course, an ice rink, around fifteen bars and restaurants, a surf simulator, a “Central Park” district… It’s not a city but a Royal Caribbean liner. The railway company has completed the construction of its crazy project: “Icon of the Seas”.

The 365 m long boat has completed its first trials off the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. “During her first series of sea trials, Icon of the Seas traveled hundreds of miles, during which the main engines, hull, braking systems, steering, noise and vibration levels were all tested,” the US-Norwegian shipping line said in a statement. A second series of tests should take place by the end of the year, before a first cruise in 2024.

The “largest aquatic center of the seas”

On board, 7,500 passengers and 2,350 crew members should benefit from it next year. Her inaugural cruise is already sold out with tickets selling for between $1,000 and $94,000 for “an ultimate family suite.” From the top of its 20 floors and weighing 250,000 tonnes, the “Icon of the Seas” is more than just a simple liner, but the “largest aquatic center of the seas”.

Excessiveness that inevitably gives rise to some criticism of respect for the environment. To defend itself from polluting, Royal Caribbean International advances the argument of liquefied natural gas (LNG), thanks to which the “Icon of the Seas” will advance. “The cleanest-burning marine fuel,” says the company on his site, instead of fuel oil, like most constructions of this type so far. Not sure that this is enough to convince the most pessimistic.
