The mounting crisis has prompted top United Nations officials to warn that the territory is at breaking point.
Besieged Families Trapped in Qusra as Outpost Clashes Unfold
Israeli settlers have been besieging two Palestinian families in their homes in the occupied West Bank since Sunday, leaving food stocks critically low and water and power supplies cut off. The standoff centers on an illegal settler outpost established in the village of Qusra near Nablus, where Palestinian security camera footage documented settlers tearing down a stone wall outside the Abu Ridi family home and using the rubble to block local roads.
The blockade trapped seven people, including two young girls, inside what is known as Area B, which falls under Palestinian administrative control and Israeli security control. Posting updates on social media as supplies dwindled, Qusay Abu Ridi described the situation as critical, especially as they remained completely isolated.

Aysha Hassan, another resident trapped in the targeted homes, reported that settlers set the outpost up four days ago and that the families have been effectively trapped since, with settlers attempting to break through her gate while cursing, insulting, and throwing stones at the families. On Monday, Israeli settlers blocked Israeli journalists from the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper from trying to reach the Palestinian properties, with soldiers at the scene refusing to help when the reporters’ car was blocked for two hours. Although an ambulance eventually reached the properties late Tuesday to deliver food and evacuate a child for medical care, the underlying confrontation exposed deep friction between local populations and security forces.
Military Condemnation and Disciplinary Action Following Outpost Raids
The military response to the Qusra outpost drew sharp criticism after initial reports indicated that the first soldiers arriving at the scene were filmed praying with the settlers. The incident intensified pressure on the military to halt rogue land seizures carried out by settlers emboldened by Netanyahu’s right-wing government, which has spearheaded a rapid expansion of settlements in the territory.
In a statement issued late Tuesday, the military issued some of its sharpest criticism to date regarding settler outposts, describing the Qusra encampment as illegal, reprehensible, and unacceptable activity that harms the residents of the areas and disrupts their daily lives.
Major General Avi Bluth, head of the military’s Central Command, traveled to the site early Wednesday with other senior officers to meet with residents and voice grave concern. Shortly afterward, Israeli forces deployed tear gas and stun grenades against a large crowd of settlers, confiscating the canopy under which the settlers were sheltering while leaving other equipment behind.
The IDF stated that Border Police forces evacuated the tent and were working to evacuate the civilians staying there while the incident was still ongoing. The military also announced that disciplinary action would be taken against the security personnel involved, who were documented at the site several days ago.
Meanwhile, the Israeli human rights group Yesh Din urgently appealed to the head of the military’s Central Command on Tuesday for the army to protect the besieged residents, evacuate the settlers’ outpost, and hold the settlers accountable.
Wider Rampages Spark Warnings That the West Bank Is at Breaking Point
The crisis in Qusra is part of a broader, violent escalation across the region. The Palestinian village mayor, Abdel Azim Wadi, told the BBC that local residents had seen a clear and sustained pattern of targeting Qusra,
pointing out that last month a newly completed mosque was set on fire with graffiti in Hebrew sprayed nearby following an incident in the Palestinian village of Tal.
Across the West Bank, Israeli political and military leaders are scrambling to contain a recent wave of settler attacks, warning against further violence targeting Palestinian communities as vigilantes have rampaged through villages, beating local residents, torching a mosque, and assaulting and injuring Israeli security forces who helped demolish an illegal outpost this week near the flash point city of Hebron.
These developments converged in New York, where a top UN official told the Security Council on Tuesday that the West Bank is at breaking point.
All settlements are illegal under international law, and outposts are set up without official Israeli authorization.
