Ief launches the “Genoa pact” to contain the export crisis

A Genoa pact, made between shippers, carriers, shipowners and logistics operators to support Italian companies that trade abroad and slow down the growth in costs to which they are exposed, following the mark-ups caused by the attacks in the Gulf of Aden and in Suez Canal as well as conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine. The Italian Export Forum (Ief), chaired by Lorenzo Zurino, created the conditions for making a pact in the most important port in Italy for export goods, i.e. the port of Genoa.

The Forum gathered today, 19 April 2024, in the Ligurian capital, for a meeting entitled Export logistics, ports and geopolitics: how to manage the crisis, some of the most important national (and Genoese) logistics and port operators, as well as local institutions and the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Edoardo Rixi.

New surge in the cost of containers

«We wanted to bring together – explains Zurino – in one of the most important ports in Italy and Europe, all the people who, directly or indirectly, trade with foreign countries. And from there we would like a “Genoa pact” to be born. We would like to say to the participants: in the face of the geopolitical crises that are causing the cost of container freight to rise again, can you help exporting companies to ensure that they do not suffer such a significant and sharp increase? This is why the Genoa pact is fundamental.”

The objective, continues Zurino, «is to try to team up and help businesses. If we manage to ensure that in Genoa, thanks perhaps also to the Ligurian governor, Giovanni Toti, and the mayor, Marco Bucci, a pact is born that can go in the direction of helping businesses to be competitive, everyone will benefit ». And this in the face of a situation for which, underlines Zurino, «the forecasts for exports in 2024 are certainly not expected to be in double figures. We’ll see in December but, for sure, this won’t be a brilliant year.”

Cosulich: «We need to trigger a virtuous circle»

To provide a good endorsement Augusto Cosulich, at the helm of the Fratelli Cosulich logistics group, will take care of Zurino: «I am convinced – he underlines – that the true engine of economic development lies in the courage to overcome the propensity to accumulate profits and instead turns to embracing an approach that aims to create new business methods, with the final aim of providing more job opportunities, to trigger a virtuous circle for the country”.
