If Saturday is Cat Day. See the feline beauties from the Wrocław zoo (PHOTOS)

A cat lives in almost every third Polish home, which places our country among the top European lovers of these animals. On the occasion of World Cat Day, which falls on February 17, it is also worth paying attention to their wild relatives.

Wild cats are the largest group of predatory mammals in the world when it comes to endangered species. As many as 23 out of approximately 40 are, to a greater or lesser extent, threatened with extinction in the wild. There are 8 species of cats living in the Wrocław Zoo. This:

  • lwica English Okavango,
  • Sumatran tigers – Nuri and Tengah,
  • żbiki – Ofka i Kapitan,
  • Eurasian lynxes – Pandora, Orkan, Juno and Czarka,
  • birds – Zarina i Kubi,
  • snow leopards – Nastasja, Diver, Mila, Asha and Kara,
  • red cats – Ruby and Rusty,
  • clouded leopards – Pia and Chen.

On Saturday, February 17, they have their big celebration – World Cat Day 2024. See the feline beauties from the Wrocław zoo in our gallery.

The main mission of zoos today is the protection of animal species and conservation breeding. Among the endangered species, the Sumatran tiger is in the worst situation in the wild.

In the fall of 2022, our young tigress Surya went to Germany to have a chance to meet a partner and extend her species. We recorded further successes with our snow leopards. In 2021, Mila and Makalu were born, and Makalu had already gone to the zoo in France to meet his partner. Last year, the younger siblings of our snow leopards – Asha and Kara – were born. Sumatran tigers and snow leopards are endangered species. We are particularly happy about such successes.

Weronika Skupin, spokeswoman for the Wrocław Zoo

It is worth adding that soon there will be more felines in the Wrocław Zoo, because new Angolan lions will be brought to the Lion House that is currently being built. – We don’t know where yet, but we will be able to say more soon. The lion’s house is growing before our eyes – adds Weronika Skupin.

The Wrocław garden together with the Wrocław ZOO Foundation – DODO supports, among others:

  • the Sumatran tiger conservation program in Sumatra at Kerinci Seblat National Park run by the WildCats Conservation Alliance;
  • Snow Leopard Trust in protecting snow leopards in their natural habitat;
  • protecting clouded leopards in Borneo through financial support for a wildlife monitoring program on oil palm plantations run by the Hutan organization;
  • Polish Association for Nature “Wilk”, which researches the habits of lynxes and wolves, conducts scientific and educational activities and protects them in nature.

We wish all fur babies the best on Cat Day! Big meow!
