Vienna (OTS/IGGÖ) The Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) strongly appeals for an end to the violence in the Middle East.

“The shocking images that have reached us since yesterday have left us in deep dismay. Our prayers and thoughts are with the numerous victims in the Holy Land,” emphasized IGGÖ President Ümit Vural on Sunday morning in view of the worrying developments in the region.

The IGGÖ not only strongly condemns excesses of violence and blatant human rights violations, but also calls for all forms of glorification of violence, which can be observed sporadically on the streets of Austria, to be avoided.

At the same time, the IGGÖ warns not to use the conflict as a breeding ground for hatred and division within society. It is essential that we reflect on the values of peace, tolerance and mutual respect. Religion must never be misused for political purposes.

During this difficult time, the IGGÖ also informs that its school authority is actively working on a handout for Islamic religious teachers, which is intended to ensure that current events can be treated sensitively and responsibly in schools.
