IGPN Launches Probe After Rennes Scooter Collision Leaves Rider Critical
An investigation by the Inspection générale de la police nationale (IGPN) is underway in Rennes following a severe collision between a 22-year-old man riding a scooter and a Republican Security Corps (CRS) police van. The crash left the young man fighting for his life, with his vital prognosis currently engaged, according to statements from the public prosecutor’s office.
Jean-Marie Blin, the deputy public prosecutor of Rennes, confirmed that the case shifted to the national police oversight body after initial emergency investigations were conducted by the local commissariat. The preliminary inquiry is proceeding under the legal classification of involuntary injuries resulting from the operation of a vehicle.
Pursuit, U-Turns, and a Fatal Glance Backward
According to the preliminary findings released by the Rennes parquet, the sequence of events began late Friday afternoon when the 22-year-old rider followed a CRS van while reportedly shouting insults at the vehicle’s occupants.
In response to the harassment, the police van pulled over to a stop. One crew member stepped out of the vehicle before the van began moving again to execute a U-turn further down the road.
Investigators note that the young man maneuvered around the dismounted officer and accelerated down the street. While traveling at a high rate of speed, he passed a civilian car. As he glanced backward to check if he was still being pursued, he failed to notice the CRS van returning to the scene at a reduced speed.
The Impact and a Critical Lack of Surveillance Footage
Despite the driver of the police van attempting evasive maneuvers to avoid an impact, the scooter rider struck the vehicle with significant force. The severity of the crash has left the victim hospitalized in critical condition.
The investigation faces a notable evidentiary hurdle as authorities establish the facts of the collision. The deputy public prosecutor confirmed that no closed-circuit surveillance cameras are located at the site of the accident, leaving investigators heavily reliant on witness statements, forensic vehicle analysis, and testimony from the involved officers and civilian motorists.
