Kais Saied also maintained that this illegal immigration was part of a “criminal enterprise hatched at the dawn of this century to change the demographic composition of Tunisia”, in order to transform it into an “African only” country and blur its character ” Arab-Muslim”.
an NGO denounces a “hate speech” by the president
For its part, the non-governmental organization Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) denounced a “hateful” speech by the president.
“This speech causes great disappointment and consternation. This racist and hateful speech marks a sad day. The fact that the president of a country that has signed international conventions on immigration makes such a statement is extremely serious,” his spokesman Romdhane Ben Amor told AFP.
According to official figures quoted by the FTDESTunisia has nearly 21,000 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, most of whom are in an irregular situation.
