There is a Mega Millions lottery winner who walked away with $1.3 billion, but more than a month after the prize was won, the person has not yet collected his fortune.
He only has 11 months left to collect his fortune.
The individual, whose identity is still unknown, bought the ticket at a Speedway gas station in the city of Des Plaines, in the state of Illinois.
“We don’t know whether or not they know they won an award. Therefore, I encourage everyone to check your ticket“,” Harold Mays, director of the Illinois lottery, told The Guardian newspaper.
This became the third largest single prize ever won by anyone in US lottery history and the second largest prize ever awarded in Mega Millions.
The winning numbers of the draw were: 13-36-45-57-67, with Mega Ball: 14.
However, Illinois lottery officials say they have yet to be visited by the winner.
It should be noted that Mega Millions winners have one year from the draw date to claim their prize.according to the rules of the game.
On the other hand, winners have only 60 days to choose whether they want to collect the money in a single lump sum or in smaller annual payments.
If the year does happen and the winner does not claim their prize, each state participating in the Mega Millions lottery will be returned its share of the $1.337 million, according to the rules of the contest.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, DC, and the US Virgin Islands, with play coordinated by state lotteries.
It’s not clear why the winner hasn’t claimed their prize, but it’s also not something that hasn’t happened before.
