“I’m an Apple fan”: CEO and founder of Huawei makes revelation at event in China

Huawei has already been banned from the United States after being accused by the government of being a “national security risk” due to alleged links to the Chinese Communist Party. Despite this, the company’s CEO and founder, Ren Zhengfei, does not seem to harbor any resentment against North American companies such as Apple.

In a speech given to hundreds of students during the International Collegiate Programming Contest held in China last month, Zhengfei said:

We often find ourselves pondering the secret behind the unparalleled quality of Apple products. The disparity between our offerings and Apple’s is clear. I’m genuinely delighted to have Apple as a mentor, giving us the invaluable opportunity to learn and compare. In that sense, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to label myself an Apple fan.

During the speech, the CEO answered some questions and said he was against “xenophobia”, seeing Apple as a kind of valuable teacher. The founder’s words were revealed this week in a memo published on the event’s official website.

Furthermore, Zhengfei said what US sanctions have meant for Huawei in recent years:

US sanctions have definitely put pressure on Huawei, but pressure is also motivation. After the US crackdown, we were forced to switch to another platform [de infraestrutura], which was difficult. We have now established our own platform, which may not necessarily work on the same basis as the American platform, but will certainly be interconnected.

In this comment, the founder is referring to the Huawei Mate 60, which was recently launched in China with the first Kirin chip developed without using North American technologies. The novelty became a symbol of China’s independence and the possibility of changing the game internationally as a strong competitor.

This change in the market appears imminent, as a report from Securities Daily indicates that Huawei has raised its cell phone production target by 20% in the second half of 2023. This indicates that the company wants to invest to dominate the largest smartphone market in the world: China, where it already ranks as one of the 5 largest manufacturers .
