“Vou para onde?” That question hangs heavily over the residents of a residential building in Matosinhos, where an immediate evacuation order has forced six families to confront the reality of an imminent structural collapse. As one resident expressed, “Ninguém dorme com medo que a casa caia,” highlighting the climate of fear that has gripped the occupants.
Municipal authorities in Matosinhos determined the urgent evacuation of the private apartment block located at number 625 on Rua das Farrapas, in the parish of Perafita, after a specialized technical study confirmed a severe risk of structural failure. The building, which houses 16 residents across six apartments, was officially flagged as presenting an immediate threat of ruin that compromises both public safety and essential utility infrastructure, including water, power, and gas lines, according to reports by CNN Portugal. The council has granted the families a 20-day deadline to vacate the premises.
Eight Years of Escalating Fissures on Rua das Farrapas
The path to this displacement began long before the 2023 evaluations or the recent evacuation notice communicated to property owners on November 2. According to documentation cited by CNN Portugal, residents first contacted Civil Protection regarding cracking issues back in 2018.

Over the years, the municipal inspection commission monitored numbers 625, 635, and 649 on Rua das Farrapas. While municipal intervention for private residential buildings remains limited under standard jurisdiction, the escalating complexity of the structural pathologies prompted the local council to commission an independent technical assessment in 2023.
That evaluation revealed severe degradation across all three adjacent entryways. The westernmost structure, number 625, showed the most alarming deterioration, featuring deep fractures in primary structural elements, detached exterior coatings, and distinct signs of differential settlement.
The Scramble for Alternative Housing as Deadlines Loom
Now Canal reported that the affected families possess limited income to secure alternative housing independently, leaving them heavily reliant on local government intervention. In response, the Matosinhos municipality has stated it is prepared to evaluate providing social support and temporary rehousing for the 16 inhabitants if necessary.
The party criticized the timeline between the initial 2018 complaints and the final evacuation order, labeling it “absolutamente inaceitável” that the municipality had been aware of the situation for years while taking what they described as limited action.
The municipality has mandated a “manutenção permanente de acompanhamento” for the site, even as families grapple with the immediate logistics of abandoning their homes.
