Improving Safety and Traffic Flow in Tivoli: Brussels’ Leading School District

The scene took place this Friday morning, in the middle of mobility week, under the eyes of many children, a witness tells us. A cyclist was riding on rue Dieudonné Lefèvre, in Laeken. A motorist, a mother coming to drop off her child, opens her door without looking. A violent collision ensues at the Be-Here covered market.

The Brussels-Ixelles police zone confirms the facts. The injured cyclist was taken to hospital, but was still conscious.

”Many people saw the scene. It’s a very busy route,” explains the witness, whose children attend a local establishment. “The mother who opened the door was very unwell, and was also in shock. It’s a pure accident. My thoughts are with these two ladies.”

Caught in the act last summer, he started dealing again from home and was caught a second time: 8 kg of drugs seized

“In the morning, it’s chaotic”

But behind this accident, voices are being raised to demand more safety on this axis. “There is a problem in the neighborhood. The traffic is too heavy. In the morning, it’s chaotic,” laments the witness, who, like other parents, is calling for measures.

The Mobility alderman, Bart Dhondt (Groen), visited the site during the day. The cabinet says it is “aware” of the security problem on the axis. A mobility plan for this Tivoli district is planned. Announced for the end of 2022, this plan was however delayed, but should see the light of day under this legislature. “We are working on traffic flows and the objective is to reduce traffic.”
