Seoul Transportation Corporation announced on the 6th that it will increase the number of trains on subway lines 4 and 7, which are highly congested during rush hour, starting from the 30th.

As the basic fare for the Seoul subway increased by 150 won from the 7th, this is one of the service improvement measures to ensure that the revenue from the fare increase can lead to improved convenience for citizens in using the subway.

Line 4 will operate a total of four times, including rush hours. The highest congestion rate of Line 4 (as of 8:00 to 8:30 a.m.) is 186%, which is the highest among Lines 1 to 8.

Congestion here is a number that indicates how many people are on board the carriage, and is the actual number of passengers divided by the number of passengers.

The Corporation analyzed that the peak congestion rate of Line 4 will be reduced by 167% with this increase.

Line 7 will operate a total of two times, once during rush hour and once during rush hour. Once the increase is made, the congestion rate is expected to drop from 161% to 148%.

It is expected that as perceived congestion decreases, comfort within the train will also improve.

Meanwhile, Line 9 was planning to increase trains to 48 trains in 8 trains with the goal of February next year, but the schedule has been brought forward and trains will be introduced in stages from the end of December this year.

This is a measure to fundamentally reduce the congestion on Line 9, which is increasing due to the recent transfer of five railway lines (Line 5, Line 9, Airport Railroad, Gimpo Gold Line, and West Sea Line) centered around Gimpo Airport.

When the Line 9 expansion is completed, the number of train operations will increase by a total of 24 times (12 for express trains and 12 for regular trains) during weekday rush hours, and the highest congestion rate for express trains is expected to decrease significantly from 194% to 163%.

Baekho, CEO of Seoul Transportation Corporation, said, “We will continue to make practical service improvements that citizens can sympathize with and feel so that the profits earned through this fare increase can be used for the convenience of citizens.”
