In addition to Mickey Mouse, find out which books and films enter the public domain in 2024

It took a while, but finally Mickey Mouse, or at least part of him and his representation, entered the public domain from this Monday (1st). Because of the character, Disney managed to change American copyright law several times, but now the initial version of the character (and also Minnie) has become free to use — considering what appears in the shorts Steamboat Willie and Plane Crazy , launched 95 years ago.

There are different rules for something to enter the public domain around the world, but the fact is that several literary, musical and audiovisual works reach this category at the beginning of each year.

In the case of international productions, the same goes for the book Orlando, by Virginia Woolf, The Threepenny Opera, a classic by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Nothing New on the Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, recently adapted into a film, in addition to films by Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and others.

In Brazil, this includes the entire work of Graciliano Ramos, from Alagoas, whose books can be edited, sold and adapted without a specific license.

See below a list of the main works that enter the public domain as of today:

  • Steamboat Willie and Plane Crazy (silent version) (directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks)
  • Work by Graciliano Ramos
  • DH Lawrence, O Amante de Lady Chatterley
  • Bertolt Brecht, The Threepenny Opera (in the original German, Die Dreigroschenoper)
  • Virginia Woolf, Orlando
  • Erich Maria Remarque, Nothing New on the Front (in the original German, Im Westen nichts Neues)
  • WEB Du Bois, Dark Princess
  • Claude McKay, Home to Harlem
  • AA Milne, illustrations by EH Shepard, House at Pooh Corner (featuring the character Tigger)
  • JM Barrie, Peter Pan; or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up (because it wasn’t “published” for copyright purposes until 1928)
  • Radclyffe Hall, The Well of Loneliness
  • Evelyn Waugh, Decline and Fall
  • Agatha Christie, The Mystery of the Blue Train
  • Wanda Gág, Millions of Cats (the oldest American picture book still in print)
  • Robert Frost, West-Running Brook
  • Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, The Front Page
