IN: Algeria – Uganda relocated to the Stade du 5 Juillet

Initially scheduled at the New Stadium in Oran, the meeting between the Greens and Uganda on June 4, on behalf of the first day of the CAN 2023 qualifiers, will finally take place at the July 5, 1962 Stadium in Algiers.

The reunion of EN with Oran will ultimately have to wait. Accustomed to hosting almost exclusively its opponents ay Stade Mustapha Tchaker de Blida, Algeria has opted for a change of domicile for this first day of qualifying for CAN 2023. Initially chosen as host city, Oran will not finally welcome teammates by Rais M’Bolhi for this first post-qualifying match at the 2022 World Cup. Indeed, Djamel Belmadi and his men should finally play the match scheduled against Uganda on June 4 at the Stade du 5-Juillet 1962 .

Information from sources close to the management of the selection reports a change of stage following the execution of the final preparations prior to the Mediterranean Games to be held in Oran. Scheduled from June 25 to July 5, the JM will host 26 countries competing in 24 different disciplines with the main competition site being the new stadium in Oran. Built especially for this occasion, the infrastructure is in final preparations before the official launch of the Games in a month. Thus, the Organizing Committee of the Mediterranean Games would have issued its veto to the domiciliation of the meeting of the Greens at the new stadium, thus wishing to preserve the state of the lawn twenty days before the opening ceremony.

Faced with this veto, the FAF therefore fell back on the OCO Mohamed Boudiaf, which includes the Stade du 5-Juillet 1962, which remains an infrastructure approved by the CAF for the domiciliation of EN matches. More accustomed to Blida, Aissa Mandi and his teammates will therefore reunite with the main stadium in the capital almost two years after their last appearance. The last meeting of the Greens domiciled in Algiers dates back to November 12, 2020 during the meeting between EN and Zimbabwe (QCAN 2021) which ended in a large Algerian victory (3-1).
