A London hospital offers students the opportunity to confront concrete medical emergency situations. Via a virtual reality headset, they must make decisions that will influence the health of the virtual patient.
In a London hospital (Great Britain), students with no experience find themselves alone in the face of a medical emergency, with the life of a virtual patient in their hands. “There, it is a scenario with a cardiac arrest”, whispers a man during the exercise. Asthma attack, diabetes attack, stroke… The slightest error of these future doctors can be fatal. Faced with a concrete situation, the students have a few seconds to make a decision, by answering the questions displayed in front of them.
“It was like writing a movie”
This sensory immersion is ultra realistic. “It was like writing a movie. We wrote the scripts and took actors to play. We also had people specialized in video games to design the interactions“, explains Adrian Cowell, innovation manager at Imperial College. A scenario that can be useful for these students, anxious at the idea of starting their internship without experience in the field.
