in France, the MG4 is already ahead of the Renault Zoé

The MG4 is already meeting with some success in France. The Chinese electric compact climbs into the top 5 in sales, ahead of the Renault Zoé.

The electric car market confirms that it is changing rapidly at the start of 2023. The first element of pressure was the price cuts applied by Tesla, which some manufacturers have promised to follow. However, Renault has already claimed that it would be impossible for it to keep up with the American firm’s price drop.

But the most worrying news for traditional manufacturers seems to be the success of Chinese cars. As expected, with an entry price of 22,990 euros after bonuses, the MG4 is attracting consumers.

For its first month of appearance in the sales statistics, the electric compact climbs into the top 5. With 686 units sold, the MG4 is even ahead of the Renault Zoé, which found 646 new owners in January.

For this first month of 2023, the Dacia Spring dominates the ‘zero emissions’ market. The low-cost electric city car has sold 1,911 copies and is ahead of the Fiat 500. The Italian is still very successful with 1,598 units, which allows it to beat the electric Renault Megane.

A rise in power to come for the MG4?

The French however ends on the podium with 1506 copies sold, ahead of another French. Indeed, the Peugeot e-208 is clearly ahead of the MG4 with 1337 models sold in one month. The Tesla Model Y and Model X rank further, with 424 and 278 sales, respectively.

There is no doubt that the two Americans have the opportunity to ramp up soon, with the drastic price cuts. But it is the MG4 that will have to be watched in the coming months. Indeed, it seems that its attractive price, linked to a very reasonable quality, is an effective argument to make it meet with success on the Old Continent.

Unfortunately, Renault’s pricing policy could quickly cost the manufacturer dearly. It is obvious that Made in France is paid for, and that some customers will not hesitate to favor it. But with the desire to electrify the auto market and the political class, and while the purchasing budget remains a brake on consumption, the 10,000 euros difference between the MG4 and the electric Megane may play a role important in their respective sales.
