In Kabul, in an underground school for girls

In Kabul, girls of college or high school age are now deprived of them by the Taliban. This English-speaking Afghan site went on a report to an underground school, open anonymously in a district of the city, despite the risks.

Dozens of young girls whisper as they crowd into a house in Kabul, the Afghan capital. For months, an underground school has been set up there and about fifty girls are taking science, mathematics and literature classes there. They are among the millions of girls deprived of schooling since the Taliban took over power in Afghanistan in August.

From then on, the Islamist group restricted the education of girls to primary education. Secondary education is now only possible in a few of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces. Mursal, a university graduate, risks her life by managing her secret school: the only teacher in this structure, she is convinced that teaching the girls in her neighborhood deserves to take the risk. His students too will be strictly punished by the Taliban if they are caught here.

“The objective, with the creation of this school, is to help girls to resume their schooling, which was interrupted when the Taliban returned to power”, explains Mursal, who wishes to remain anonymous for security reasons. The young woman, who is in her twenties, takes care of school at her own expense, in particular by providing the necessary equipment for schoolgirls.

“Do not remain illiterate and without a future”

Suraya, one of the students, testifies that the return of the Taliban gives her the impression of being sentenced to life imprisonment:
