April 29 The annual tree planting festival – the National Tree Planting Festival – was held throughout Lithuania. The State Forestry Office planned that this year foresters will plant a record number of new forests – as many as 800 ha, where they will plant as many trees as the population of Lithuania – 2.8 million. In the Rokiškis regional unit, pine trees and fir trees were planted in the Obeliai and Šimonii forest groves.
In apple forestry, the trees were planted in a cleared area in the Vyžuonas forest. Forester Vidmantas Šarkambiškis told how approximately 2.6 ha will look like after clearing. 5,900 one-year-old container pines were planted here, and 2,700 fir trees were planted on the edges of the plot. For the first time, special planters were used, which speed up the planting of pine trees. The trees had to be planted with shovels. Because these seedlings are bigger. It is planned to plant another 1,200 black alder seedlings in this place.
More than 50 helpers gathered. Jūratė Šinkūnienė, the elder of Obeliai, was not afraid of work with her two older nephews, and she left the baby at home, just a few months old. Residents and employees of the Skemėi social care home worked diligently, Virginijus Pupelis, chairman of the Obelii community center, Valius Kazlauskas, head of the Freedom Struggle History Museum in Obelii, Rita Dovydė, head specialist of the Panevėžys regional department of the Lithuanian Probation Service, and her husband, Edmundas Dovydas, as well as other proactive citizens.
After finishing the work and planting pine trees and Christmas trees in rows among the stumps and spring mushrooms, a feast was waiting for the helpers – the gastro studio “Šaukštas ir šakutė” served chicken stew with vegetables on that occasion. The little forest planters received gifts. Prizes were also awarded to the participants of the short quiz. For those gathered, Forestry was both entertainment and an opportunity to feel that they contributed to the preservation of Lithuanian forests.
