From empresses to freedwomen, the exhibition titled Portraits and secrets of Roman women invites the public to discover how the daughters, wives and mothers of the Early Empire lived. Some thirty works on loan from museums in Florence, Italy, illustrate this subject.

Busts, altars and sketches immerse the visitor in the 1st and 2nd century AD. The exhibition is structured around three themes. First there is a whole section devoted to the matron, exemplary wives and mothers embodied by the empresses and leading women of the imperial house. In the third part of the exhibition, we discover that these women, faithful and discreet, also occupy a public role and cultivate a certain influence in power games. Temples in their honor and statues in their image testify to the importance of the place they occupied in the society of the time.

The second part of the exhibition is devoted to the counter-examples of the matron. The ideal woman leaves room for freed women (former slaves) and women of the imperial family who are sometimes wrongly accused of adultery or poisoning. Libelous accusations to get rid of an embarrassing wife, mother or sister.
