in Riga they are going to renovate the small Naberezhnaya street

In any case, according to the developed program, it is envisaged to repair the beginning of Maza Krasta street and transform it into a landscaped public space.

During the repairs, curb stones and sidewalk asphalt will be restored, new trees and bushes will be planted, and the green area will be put in order.

It is believed that the place where Maza Krasta Street begins was historically a comfortable recreation area. And in the 1930s, near the now filled-in canal between the city and the island of Zvizdengolm (Zvirgzdusala), there was a bathhouse, a place for walks and recreation for the surrounding residents.

In fact, there was no Maza Krasta street at that time, but there was an Embankment (Krasta) street, which served as a shore, and then the canal was filled up and the island of Zvizdenholm ceased to exist: an embankment for the route to the current Island Bridge was built here.

Now the beginning of Maza Krasta Street is the only access point to the tunnel leading to the promenade along the coast. Residents here take walks, ride bicycles and electric scooters, and walk their dogs.

The total cost of reconstruction of this public space could be 63 thousand euros.

As explained in the Town Hall, the goal of this “participation project” is to promote the development of neighborhoods in Riga with their own identity and recognition, to help create local communities (or, as it is now fashionable to say, communities – groups of people united by a common theme, interest).

Until May 31, residents can submit their proposals for a new competition for “participation budget” ideas. The presence of such city funding for the “wishes of residents” is by no means out of the kindness of the capital’s leadership, and its mandatory nature is directly stated in the new law “On Local Governments”. Residents can submit their projects by filling out a form on the Riga City Council website, by e-mail, or by bringing them to the neighborhood reception centers for residents (Ed. Smilga St. 46, Daugavpils St. 31, Gobas St. 6A, Ieriku St. 43A, Brivibas street, 49/53).
