In the first branch in the Netherlands: ALDI abolishes cashiers! | life & knowledge

Heard the queuing in the supermarket soon to be a thing of the past?

In Utrecht (Netherlands) discounter giant Aldi Nord opens a high-tech branch. The peculiarity: Boxes or cashiers you won’t find here. The payment also runs completely in the background.

BILD explains how the new system works – and whether the new supermarket will also come to Germany.

And this is how it works: Before shopping, customers install the so-called “Aldi Shop & Go App”. With the help of several hundred intelligent ceiling cameras and sensors on the shelves, a system registers which products the customer puts in their shopping basket.

Once the shopping is done, you simply walk out of the store. Payment is made automatically using a credit card stored in the app.

Are the approximately 10,000 Dutch Aldi employees now threatened with dismissal? At least not yet: there are still employees in the branches who stock the shelves, bake fresh bread and are available to customers if they have any questions.

The 38,000 German employees in 2,200 branches do not have to worry for the time being either. Because when the cashless supermarkets will come to Germany is currently still unclear.

In selected branches, Rewe and Edeka offer a system in which customers scan their goods themselves and then pay via app or an extra checkout.
