In the South, the tension on digital professions is greater than elsewhere

Digitization or digitalization, everyone has their own preference but whatever, the two words are on the lips of all economic players. For companies, successfully incorporating and mastering IT tools to improve their processes is a key step. We still need to find the people to put them in charge. This is where the machine stalls according to the figures of the great digital economy. The observatory of this public group, called GEN_SCAN has developed a tension index for digital professions which measures “ the relationship between the need estimated from the number of job offers published and the training capacity in terms of the number of courses available “. With 1.92, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur gets the worst score. An index well above the two other worst performers, Île-de-France and Pays de la Loire, whose index is 1.1 and 1.05 respectively.

Even within the region, there are many differences in the department. The index exceeds 2 in Bouches-du-Rhône while it only presents a small 0.62 for Hautes-Alpes. The Alpes-Maritimes are the second most tense territory (1.91) ahead of Var (1.7) then Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (1.41) and finally Vaucluse (1.37). We note that the main tensions are located in the two departments where the main areas of life and employment are located.

The tension around digital professions is not specific to Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, but the fact that it presents the most critical situation may seem paradoxical. The region is in fact “ le seat of many government and private initiatives to encourage the growth of the digital economy, such as startup incubators, research centers and financing programs » as recalled by GEN_SCAN which also mentions « its technological clusters, such as Sophia of Antipolishome to many high-tech and research companies ».

A lack of courses

When we look in detail at the tension index, the observation is clear: it is on the training side that the South is lagging behind. In fact, it arrives at the very end of the ranking of the number of courses offered (excluding Corsica and Overseas). On the other hand, in the ranking of job offers, Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur is in fifth position out of twelve. It is therefore not surprising that 68% of companies consider digital recruitment difficult in the region, as highlighted by a 2022 Pole Emploi study. Only Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Pays de la Loire have a higher rate (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Centre-Val de Loire also being at 68%).

« Digital players have difficulty hiring », confirms Mathieu Nebra, co-founder of the online course platform Openclassroom, who points out the difficult scaling of training offers: “lOrganizations don’t always have enough space “. A physical limit that the group does not know and on which it intends to rely to develop… Particularly in the region. Because the number of learners in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur at Openclassroom is only the fifth in France. “ One of the reasons we identify is access to financing which must be facilitated », Estimates Mathieu Nebra. It also highlights the political choices to favor physical locations rather than online routes depending on the territory.

“All jobs are digital”

The difficulty for training is to be able to improve a person’s skills over a short period because needs are constantly evolving. “ A five or ten year course does not make sense, we do not know the expectations for the professions at that time.judge Mathieu Nebra. Un community manager did not need to know about Tik Tok until recently because it simply did not exist whereas today it is one of the main social networks “. The AI boom symbolizes this perpetual mutation and the need for continuous training. Currently recruitment directly linked to artificial intelligence is quite low, however its use in other professions requires learning to master this tool.

These jobs that don’t yet exist…

The professions most in tension are in the field of project management or e-marketing. Needs that are not “ specific to Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur » but stronger points out Mathieu Nebra. As of September 1, more than 4,000 job offers were listed at the Grande Ecole du Numérique. “ The needs are gigantic », Estimates the manager. “ All professions are digital in the tools they can use, no one is safe from having to develop their skills », he continues. Digitization is just starting and is not ready to stop…
