Since Thursday, and until Sunday, the United Kingdom celebrates the 70 years of reign of Queen Elizabeth II: the platinum jubilee. Cartooning for Peace is devoting its cartoon week to this important event for the British monarchy.

Seventy years of reign. Thursday, June 2, UK launched Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, whose festivities will last four days. The sovereign’s recent health concerns did not prevent her from appearing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, alongside other members of the royal family, to greet the large and enthusiastic crowd.

But due to a “certain discomfort” felt during the first day of the celebrations, the queen will not attend the mass celebrating the 70th anniversary of her reign on Friday. All eyes will then be on Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, who will be making their first public appearance in the UK since leaving for the US.

Particularly appreciated by the British, Elizabeth II, now 96 years old, holds the record for longevity for a monarch in her country.

Although the British monarchy is criticized in many respects, Elizabeth II alone embodies a whole section of contemporary history.
