It is an unusual attack which took place in July 2022 in a Zurich RER and which finds its epilogue at the public prosecutor’s office in Winterthur/Unterland with a conviction. Indeed, a sixty-year-old man was accused of deliberately crushing the foot of a pregnant woman.

The events occurred one afternoon in the S3 which connects Zurich to Wetzikon. The 24-year-old woman, who was visibly in an advanced stage of pregnancy, was at an entrance to the train when the 65-year-old man tried to get into the carriage with his wheelchair through said entrance. The situation degenerated, the man believing that the woman was not making enough room for him. This, even though he could ride his electric wheelchair without any problem, according to the criminal ordinance that “ZüriToday” was able to read.

Insults and attack

The man then launched into a furious tirade and insulted the woman by calling her a “dirty b…” on several occasions. Worse: he attacked her with his electric device. According to the order, “the defendant intentionally and deliberately aimed his wheelchair over the victim’s foot three times.” Fortunately, the woman was not injured. However, the public prosecutor found that the man’s behavior had “far exceeded the socially tolerated measure”.

As a result, the Zurich courts sentenced the sixty-year-old for insults and assault to ten day fines of 30 francs as well as a fine of 200 francs. Added to this are procedural costs of 800 francs and 60 francs in expenses for police work. The judgment is final.
