(CNN) — A Broward County, Florida fire-rescue helicopter crashed into an apartment complex early Monday morning, killing at least two people and injuring two others.

Authorities listed the deceased as Broward Sheriff’s Fire Captain Terryson Jackson, who was in the helicopter, and an unidentified adult female who lived in the apartment complex.

The crash happened near an airfield north of Fort Lauderdale as the helicopter was responding to an emergency call, according to officials.

“At approximately 8:46 a.m., emergency personnel responded to an alert call from an aircraft located southwest of Pompano Beach Airpark. The helicopter involved in the crash is a BSO fire rescue helicopter. Pompano Beach transported two people to an area hospital,” the Broward County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The helicopter before it crashed in Pompano Beach, Florida on August 28, 2023.

A total of three members of the Broward Sheriff’s Fire Department were aboard the helicopter “which crashed into a structure following an in-flight fire 0.5 miles from Pompano Beach Airpark,” according to the National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB).

Just before it crashed, the helicopter had flames near the rear and was shrouded in smoke, video posted on CNN affiliate WPLG appeared to show.

The two injured people are being treated at a hospital and “have no life-threatening injuries,” authorities said. And they added that “they are in good condition.”

Terryson Jackson, 50, had worked with the Broward County Fire Department for 19 years, according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office.

“As a flight paramedic, he impacted the community on a daily basis, providing critically ill patients with the highest pre-hospital care,” the post read. “He consistently displayed an unmatched passion for his work. He always provided expert care, compassion, and reassurance to those who needed it at the time that mattered most.”

Gregory Wallace and Zoe Sottile, both with CNN, contributed to this report.
