It was a strange encounter in the South China Sea last weekend: a New York Times reporter on an “excursion boat”, several fishing boats and two Chinese “coast guard” ships. The Chinese ships began firing water cannons at the Filipino boats. Added to this was an “acoustic weapon” that caused pain to the Filipino sailors. The recordings quickly found their way onto the Chinese video platform Tiktok. Both sides accused each other of being responsible for the incident. This is the latest escalation in a conflict that has been escalating for months over a few uninhabited island groups in the South China Sea.
