Ministry Directs Google to Purge Phishing Infrastructure
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has formally directed Google to dismantle hundreds of accounts hosted on its Firebase web development platform.
Government figures indicate that citizens lost nearly $2.4 billion to cyber fraud in 2025 alone. In response to this staggering financial hemorrhage, regulatory and law enforcement bodies have sharpened their focus on the underlying infrastructure exploited by scammers.
August Sweep Exposes Bank Impostors and Malware Payloads
During a single sweep in August, authorities ordered the removal of at least 57 malicious websites and databases hosted on Google’s Firebase platform. Among these, seven explicitly mimicked dominant financial institutions, including the State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank. Fraudsters rely on these fraudulent pages to trick users into downloading malicious payloads that compromise personal devices.
Weaponizing Welfare Schemes and Android God Mode
The operational tactics deployed by cybercriminals often exploit social trust. Scammers have increasingly targeted government initiatives such as PM-KISAN, a welfare scheme providing financial support to smallholder farmers. Victims receive lures promising government payments, which direct them to seemingly safe applications designed to siphon personal data.
Once installed, the malicious software surreptitiously uploads user data to scammer-controlled databases on Firebase. This grants operators sweeping control over compromised hardware—a severe vulnerability security experts refer to as Android God Mode.
Balancing Cloud Accessibility With Platform Accountability
Google’s Firebase platform remains a vital tool for millions of legitimate developers worldwide, valued for its scalable database architecture and accessible free tiers. However, those very features have inadvertently created attractive avenues for threat actors seeking reliable, high-speed hosting for phishing campaigns. Google has stated that it maintains strict policies against fraudulent activity and is actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies to execute removal notices swiftly.
