India Welcomes IOC President Thomas Bach and Nita Ambani for 141st IOC Meeting in Mumbai

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde welcomed IOC President Thomas Bach and IOC member Nita Ambani ahead of the 141st meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to begin in Mumbai. Nita Ambani has been a member of the IOC in India since 2016. Nita Ambani is also the first Indian woman to be elected as a member of the IOC.

Now the International Olympic Committee is being held in India after a gap of 40 years. India last hosted the session in 1983 in New Delhi. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi attended the ceremony and was welcomed by the then IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Meanwhile, India has a history of performing well in the Olympics held in Paris in 1900. Norman Pritchard, the first athlete of Indian origin, competed and won silver in the 200m sprint and 200m hurdles events. Since then India has won a total of 35 medals including two individual gold medals at the Olympic Games. The first in the individual event was achieved by current IOC Athletes Commission member Abhinav Bindra and the second by Neeraj Chopra at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
