India’s 15-Member Squad for Asia Cup and ODI World Cup: Sanju Samson’s Exclusion and the X-Factor Selection

Mumbai: After the T20 series against the West Indies, the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar has reached a final agreement on India’s 15-member squad for the Asia Cup to be held at the end of this month and the ODI World Cup to be held in India in October-November. Malayalam player Sanju Samson will not have a place in the Asia Cup team or the World Cup team. Reports are coming out that the selectors are giving priority to Suryakumar Yadav over Sanju, even though he has not shined in ODIs yet.

It is believed that the selectors will keep Suriya in the teams for the Asia Cup and the World Cup as an X factor. Meanwhile, if KL Rahul returns from injury, Rahul will be the main wicket-keeper. Ishan Kishan has also secured his place in the team as the back-up wicket-keeper by scoring half-centuries in all three games of the ODI series against West Indies.

Even if Sanju is included in the squad for the Asia Cup or the World Cup, given the current team combination, chances of batting in the middle order are rare. Moreover, the selectors are unlikely to include three wicketkeepers in the 15-man squad. That is why Sanju was included in the squad for the T20 series against Ireland and Suryakumar Yadav was rested.

In the top order, after Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer after returning from injury, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be in the top seven. In this scenario, even Suryakumar or Ishan Kishan are unlikely to get a chance in the playing eleven. Even Suriya or Isha can reach the playing eleven only if the injury of Shreyas or Rahul is not cured.

Ishan Kishan will be included in the team as Rahul’s back up and Surya as Shreyas’ back up. If there was a plan to include Sanju in the Asia Cup team, the selectors would have been ready to rest Sanju in the Ireland series like Surya. But the selectors will announce the team for the Asia Cup when India plays in the T20 series against Ireland. Therefore, it is believed that Sanju will not have a place in the Asia Cup team. The World Cup squad should be announced before September 5.

It is estimated that Sanju, Yuzvendra Chahal, Pyath Krishna and R Ashwin will be included as stand-by players in the Asia Cup team and the World Cup team.
