With this order, Akasa Air becomes “the first Indian company to place a firm order for more than 200 aircraft in 17 months”, underlined the Indian Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, on X.

The minister also noted that India was now the third largest aircraft purchasing country in the world, behind China and the United States.

In June, Mr. Scindia estimated that airlines would order between 1,200 to 1,400 aircraft by 2028.

Certified in March 2017 by the FAA, the 737 MAX is a single-aisle aircraft whose development has been marked by numerous setbacks, including two crashes in 2018 in Indonesia and in 2019 in Ethiopia, which left 346 dead in total. The FAA had required several modifications before authorizing the resumption of flights.

At the end of December 2023, Boeing had delivered more than 1,370 copies of the 737 MAX and its order book still reached more than 4,000 units.
