Bengaluru: India’s win against Afghanistan in the third Twenty20 was dramatic. In the match where both the teams were level in the allotted overs, a second super over was required as the super over was tied to decide the winners. India won it. This is the first time that two super overs are required in an international T20 match. Two super overs were bowled like this in the match between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings in IPL 2020.

With this, India swept the T20 series against Afghanistan (3-0).

Rohit Sharma, who retired after the fifth ball of the first super over, continues to debate in the cricket world about his return to bat in the second super over. This is still not clear.

The event is as follows:

Afghanistan batted first in the Super Over. Mukesh Kumar bowls for India. Afghanistan scored 16 runs in six balls. In reply, Rohit Sharma and Yashaswi Jaiswal opened the batting for India. Rohit was the striker. A run by the leg in the first ball. Single off the second ball. And when India needed 15 runs in four balls to win, Rohit hit sixes in three and four balls. Rohit Sharma, who reached the non-striker’s end after taking a single on the fifth ball, surprised many when he suddenly left the ground. Instead, Rinku Singh came to the crease. Rohit was ‘retiring’ to drop someone who could run faster.

However, he could only get a single in the last ball. With this, even in the super over.

Rohit’s retirement became a problem when India had to bat again. International cricket rules state that if you return out, you cannot bat again in that match. Rohit did not return as an out. Therefore, there was no technical error in batting again. However, Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott said he was not aware of the rule.

Anyway, Rohit hit a six in the first ball of the over bowled by Farid Ahmed and a four in the second ball. Single off the third ball. Sanju Samson came to the crease after Rinku Singh got out in the fourth ball. On the fifth ball, Rohit ran for a run on Sanju’s shot. This ended the Indian innings. Spinner Ravi Bishnoi bowled against Afghanistan with a target of 12 runs. Muhammad Nabi is out in the first ball. With Rahmatullah Gurbaz also dismissed in the third ball, India won the series.

There were twists right from the start of the game. At 22 for 4 in the fifth over, Rohit Sharma (121* off 69 balls) and Rinku Singh (69* off 39 balls) put India on 190 runs for the fifth wicket to reach 212 runs. Rohit scored his 5th century in T20 and set a record in this regard.

In the reply batting, Afghanistan also reached 212 runs with the excellence of openers Rahmatullah Gurbaz (50), captain Ibrahim Sadran (50) and Gulbadin Naib (55*) to the super over.

Not legally wrong

The law of cricket states that once a batter returns out, he cannot come out to bat again in the same game. However, Rohit did not return as an out. Therefore, the umpire cannot stop batting again. However, there is a moral problem in this. The International Cricket Council is expected to discuss the issue and clarify the law – M.S. Viswanathan (BCCI Umpire)
