India’s Position on UN Resolution Condemning Israeli Settlement Activities: Analysis and Impact

“India has voted in favor of the United Nations resolution condemning Israeli occupation settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, which includes East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. India had abstained from the resolution prepared by Jordan on the Israel-Hamas conflict two weeks ago. The United Nations resolution was supported by 145 countries, including India.

The UN draft resolution entitled “Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan” was passed by a majority on November 9.

United States, Canada, Hungary, Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and Nauru voted once morest the resolution while 18 countries abstained.

Through the resolution, the UN condemned settlement activities in the regions and any activities that involve land grabbing, disruption of livelihoods of individuals, forced displacement of civilians and land occupation.

On October 28, India abstained from the resolution drafted by Jordan. The resolution called for immediate, permanent and sustained humanitarian action. But the resolution did not mention the terrorist organization Hamas.

The resolution also called for immediate, continuous, adequate and uninterrupted access to essential goods and services to civilians throughout the Gaza Strip. The resolution was titled “Protection of Civilians and Upholding Legal and Humanitarian Obligations”. The motion received 121 votes in favor and 14 once morest. 44 people abstained from voting.

India’s voting position on November 9 reflected its traditional stance on the Israel-Palestine issue.
