India’s Worst Floods Since 1940: A Look at the Worst Floods in Country History

U.S. and Chinese officials resumed high-level diplomatic talks in Washington on Monday, according to a statement from the U.S. State Department, marking the first formal engagement since November 2022 amid escalating trade and technology disputes.

The discussions, led by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel K. Akerson and Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Xie Feng, focused on “mutual concerns” including semiconductor export controls, intellectual property rights, and regional security in the Indo-Pacific, the State Department said. No public details about outcomes were released immediately.

China’s foreign ministry confirmed the talks in a brief statement, emphasizing “the importance of communication and coordination” but did not outline specific areas of agreement or contention. A separate report from Reuters, citing two U.S. officials, noted that the meeting avoided addressing contentious issues like Taiwan policy or the South China Sea, which have strained relations in recent months.

The resumption of dialogue follows weeks of heightened rhetoric. In late March, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi accused the U.S. of “economic bullying” over restrictions on chip exports, while U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that “unconstrained tech competition” risks global economic fragmentation. Neither side has publicly confirmed the timing of the talks, which were first reported by Bloomberg on April 2.

US-China trade talks to continue in Washington

Analysts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) noted that the meeting reflects a broader pattern of “calculated engagement” between the two nations, despite broader strategic rivalry. “Both sides recognize the need for structured communication to prevent miscalculation,” said CSIS fellow John Lee, citing a 2023 report on U.S.-China diplomatic protocols.

U.S. officials declined to comment beyond the State Department’s statement, while Chinese state media has not yet covered the talks. The next scheduled bilateral meeting remains unclear, though a U.S. official indicated that “preparations for a follow-up session are underway,” without specifying a date.
