Indonesian Jakarta police recently uncovered a human-smuggling syndicate and arrested 12 suspects in one go. They were all suspected of “finding people” through the Internet and communities, and sending these applicants to Cambodia to illegally sell their kidneys. Archyde.com reported that what surprised the Indonesian police was that among the 12 suspects, including a police officer and a customs immigration officer, they lured 135 million Indonesian rupiah (approximately NT$281,000) per operation to lure recruitment and sent a total of 122 Indonesian citizens to Cambodia to sell their kidneys.

The police officer in charge of the case, Hengki Haryadi, told the media that the group offered high prices to find volunteers through the Internet and the community, and then used the advantage of visa-free travel under the same ASEAN (AESAN) system to persuade them to go overseas to sell their kidneys for “cash.” According to the police’s investigation, almost all the applicants were affected by the previous new crown pneumonia epidemic and were unemployed, laid off or in financial difficulties.

According to the local laws of Indonesia, all 12 members of the smuggling group will be prosecuted for the crime of human trafficking. If convicted in the future, he may face up to 15 years in prison, plus a fine of 600 million Indonesian rupiah (approximately NT$1.25 million).

Indonesia is the hometown of important immigrant workers from Taiwan and other places, but there is also a lot of illegal human trafficking in the local area. In 2019, the government cracked down on a large-scale human-smuggling syndicate, arrested 8 main suspects, and illegally sent 1,200 Indonesian citizens abroad to work illegally overseas to make money.
