Indonesia has made sex outside of marriage a criminal offense punishable by up to a year. Parliament has passed an Act revising the Criminal Code with important changes such as extramarital sex, spreading fake news and reacting against the government. The law will apply to foreigners, tourists and business travelers staying in the country alongside Indonesian citizens.

The President will soon sign the new bill. But the transition from the old law to the new one will take a maximum of one to three years, according to Deputy Justice Minister Edward Omar Sherif Hiarij. Criminal cases are filed only on the complaint of family members. The draft bill also mentions taking legal action against those who spread fake news and those who defame the President, Vice President and government institutions.
