Indonesia Rescues Second Orangutan Mother and Baby From Wildfire in West Kalimantan
An endangered orangutan mother and her infant were evacuated from encroaching wildfires in Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province, marking the second such rescue of a pair in less than a month as severe blazes sweep across Borneo and Sumatra. Authorities transferred the pair to a wildlife rescue center on Sept. 3 after spotting them near a plantation area.

Wildlife officers tracked the mother and infant as they lingered in a plantation bordering a forested tract in West Kalimantan’s Ketapang district.
As the fire front closed in on their habitat, intervention became imperative. YIARI operational director Argitoe Ranting noted that this specific operation brings the total number of orangutans evacuated due to wildfire threats in the Ketapang district to nine within a single month. “This shows that fires not only destroy forests but also deprive animals of shelter and food,” Argitoe said, adding that most displaced animals “do not have many options” to relocate safely as their forest homes burn around them.
Medical Evaluations and Smoke Exposure Hazards
Upon arrival at the YIARI rescue and rehabilitation center, veterinarians immediately began monitoring the physical condition of both great apes. Preliminary veterinary examinations delivered some positive news, confirming that neither the mother nor the baby sustained direct burn injuries during the blaze.

However, surviving the flames does not guarantee safety. YIARI veterinarian Komara, who uses a single name in accordance with local custom, emphasized the insidious danger posed by atmospheric toxins. “Exposure to smoke over a period of time… can affect the orangutan’s respiratory system, especially when smoke concentrations in the habitat are very high,” Komara explained in an agency statement. Both animals remain under close observation as veterinary teams work to mitigate any delayed health impacts.
The lethal potential of these fires extends beyond active rescue operations. Authorities confirmed that another orangutan died last week shortly after being pulled from a fire zone. A subsequent necropsy performed by the West Kalimantan natural resources conservation agency pointed directly to severe smoke exposure as the cause of death.
The Shrinking Margins for Bornean Wildlife
