A teacher who was found guilty of raping 13 students at an Islamic boarding school, impregnating eight of his victims, was sentenced to death on Monday in Indonesia. This case generated great interest and controversy in the country due to sexual abuse in religious schools.
The subject of name Harry Wirawan36, had initially been sentenced to life imprisonment for this case, but the Prosecutor’s Office filed an appeal to obtain the death penalty.
“We accept the appeal of the Prosecutor’s Office. The accused is sentenced to the death penalty,” indicates the sentence published on Monday on the website of the High Court of Bandung, in the province of West Java. Indonesia had suspended executions and the last one took place in 2016.
Relatives of the victims demand justice
