Reforming Global Governance: Indonesia’s Call to Action

At the recent G20 foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Johannesburg, South Africa, Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arrmanatha Nasir, delivered a powerful message: the time for action is now. He stressed the urgent need for G20 countries to spearhead global governance reform and recommit to upholding international law, which he warned was facing increasing erosion.

Nasir cautioned against a repeat of the failures of the League of Nations, noting its collapse nearly 80 years ago due to weak enforcement of international law, the inability to prevent aggression by powerful nations, and a lack of commitment from member states.

“if this situation is allowed to persist, we risk experiencing a similar failure,” he stated, highlighting the precariousness of the global system.

He emphasized that multilateralism cannot remain mere rhetoric but must translate into concrete actions. Consistent and impartial enforcement of international law is crucial for maintaining its credibility,”

Nasir stated, “If international law is applied only when it benefits certain parties, its credibility will be further weakened.”

Addressing the G20 directly, Nasir highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to leading the charge for multilateral reform. He called for a system founded on inclusiveness, equality, solidarity, and partnership.

Indonesia is actively pushing for greater cooperation among multilateral institutions, including the United nations and the multilateral trading system, to create a more harmonious and effective global governance framework.

Nasir also underscored Indonesia’s support for the UN Future Pact as a vital step towards strengthening global governance and emphasized the critical role of the upcoming Financing for Development Conference in pushing for meaningful reforms.

“We must move forward to advance the reform of the multilateral system and create a better world for all,” he concluded, urging collective action to ensure a more just and peaceful global future.

The meeting, which was opened by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, saw many G20 members voicing concerns about global conflict and instability, including the ongoing situations in ukraine and Gaza.

underscoring the importance of international law in maintaining global peace and stability, addressing poverty, and mitigating the impact of geopolitical dynamics on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the G20 nations reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively towards a more sustainable and equitable future.
