At around 17:40 on December 3rd (Japan time), a large-scale eruption occurred at Mount Marapi on Sumatra, Indonesia. This eruption may cause a tsunami. We are currently investigating whether a tsunami will hit Japan. Please pay attention to future information.

Massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia

At around 17:40 (Japan time) on December 3, a large-scale eruption occurred at Marapi Volcano on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia (according to the Darwin Airway Volcanic Ash Information Center (VAAC)).

If a tsunami occurs due to this eruption and reaches Japan, the expected arrival time is early (in the Okinawa Prefecture region) around 21:00 on the 3rd. The expected maximum height of the tsunami is unknown. Please pay attention to future information.

(Note) The expected arrival time in Japan is the time when it is assumed that a pressure wave caused by a large-scale volcanic eruption propagates at 310 m/s and a tsunami is generated.
