Indonesian National Team Cancels 2023 U-20 World Cup, Supporters Hold 1 Million Black Ribbons Grief Action

JAKARTA, Waspada.co.id – In order to support the Indonesian U-20 National Team (Timnas) players who were canceled from appearing in the 2023 U-20 World Cup, Indonesian fans are reported to be taking action on the streets of Jakarta today, Friday (31/3). The support is reportedly themed as a mourning action of one million black ribbons.

Reportedly there will be distribution of black tape in Jakarta. This is a sign of grief for Indonesian football, which has just failed to host the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

FIFA revoked Indonesia’s status as the host of the 2023 U-20 World Cup following a polemic over the refusal of the Israeli U-20 national team to play in the competition. For that reason, FIFA canceled Indonesia being the host and would immediately look for a new country.

“A Grief Action of 1 million U-20 National Team black ribbons. Distribution of Black Ribbons from U-20 National Team Supporters* with U-20 National Team players and Indonesian Supporters,” in a statement obtained by MNC Portal Indonesia (MPI), Friday (31/3).

The action is planned to be held in the afternoon at a location adjacent to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (SUGBK) area. Of course the activity was held in the city center so that the wider community would also wear the black ribbon.

“The activity will be held, Friday, March 31 at 16:00 at FX Senayan (FX Front Sidewalk on Jalan Sudirman) Central Jakarta,” wrote the statement.

Previously, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and Bali Governor I Wayan Koster unanimously rejected the arrival of Israel, which is one of the U-20 World Cup contestants. As a result, FIFA immediately canceled the draw for the U-20 World Cup on the Island of the Gods and continued with the cancellation status of the host.

In fact, the event of the world’s youth football celebration is in sight and will take place. This is because it is scheduled to roll out from May 20 to June 11 in six stadiums in Indonesia.

In fact, the General Chair of PSSI, Erick Thohir, has been trying to negotiate with FIFA on this matter. However, this did not change FIFA’s decision to cancel Indonesia’s status as the host of the event. (wol/okz/ari/d1)
