Indoor Cam (2nd gen): Ring adds a privacy cover to its indoor camera

Ring’s Indoor Cam returns in a second generation. If few improvements seem to have been made on a technical level, the design has been slightly revised. On this new model, there is a cover that the user can fold over the lens in order to physically block the capture of images. No one will thus be able to observe what is happening at home in the event of hacking; a particularly sensitive subject for the company, regularly singled out for various and varied flaws until 2020. It was then that Ring decided to really take matters into its own hands, by reviewing its data protection policy more broadly . Users have thus seen the arrival of double authentication and then end-to-end encryption. And the Indoor Cam (2nd gen) provides additional protection.

A fairly light revision

This cover aside, Ring’s new camera seems identical to the first model, however, in terms of equipment at least; the Pre-roll function seems to have been added to allow you to see the few seconds preceding a detection. There is in any case a 2 megapixel sensor coupled with a lens offering a horizontal field of vision of 115 °. The infrared vision is of course also kept for the night. On the audio side, a microphone and a speaker are always present to communicate, and the second should also be able to act as a siren.

The microSD port remains for absent subscribers. The recordings therefore always go through the Ring cloud, which can certainly have advantages and in particular that of maintaining access to the images if the camera is stolen. Adding local storage, however, could have helped the company further reassure users, while allowing them to enjoy recording without having to subscribe to Ring Protect; a paid and essential subscription to access the cloud. It is offered from €3.99/month, which is therefore added to the price of the camera. Ring at least has the good taste not to increase the price compared to the first generation.

The Indoor Cam (2nd gen) is launched at the recommended retail price of €59.99. It thus remains the manufacturer’s most affordable camera, ahead of the Stick Up Cam which allows you to enjoy similar services, but outdoors thanks to its waterproof case.
