DIRECTOR of Excise Technical and Facilities, Directorate General (Dirjen) of Customs and Excise, Ministry of Finance, Iyan Rubiyanto, stated that industrial sustainability is one of the focuses of the Director General of Customs and Excise. He also hopes that the opening of the new factory will have a positive impact on the regional and national economy.

Previously, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. adding a partnership with a regional entrepreneur, PT Attin Sigaret Indonesia, in opening a new hand-rolled kretek cigarette production facility (SKT MPS) in Jaten, Karanganyar, Central Java. The opening took place last Wednesday (27/3).

This is part of the realization of Sampoerna’s employment plan for new SKT and MPS production facilities in various cities/districts on the island of Java in 2024. Jaten MPS creates employment opportunities for around 2,000 people. The number of SKT Sampoerna partners in 2024 will be 43 MPS, all of which are owned and operated by regional entrepreneurs and/or local cooperatives.

“It is hoped that the opening of MPS will continue to absorb labor and also have a multiplier effect on the surrounding economy,” said Iyan in his statement, Thursday (28/3).

The performance of the SKT segment has begun to show signs of recovery since 2020 after continuing to experience a decline in market share from 37% in 2006 to 17% in 2019. Through the support of excise policies that take into account labor absorption in the last 4 years, the SKT segment recorded a market share of 28% in in 2023.

“We wish you congratulations and success. We also appreciate Sampoerna for consistently partnering with regional entrepreneurs and cooperatives, especially in increasing the employment of thousands of workers. “For this reason, let’s maintain economic sustainability which is a positive impact of the SKT industry,” continued Iyan.

Sampoerna hopes to continue to create an inclusive and sustainable multiplier effect for the wider community through long-term investment commitments in Indonesia, which are realized, among other things, by opening new factories, opening employment opportunities, and adding partnerships with regional entrepreneurs and cooperatives.

MPS Jaten is one of five new MPS that will officially start operating in the first quarter of 2024 and complements Sampoerna’s other new SKT partnerships in Cilacap, Purwodadi and Kebumen Regencies in Central Java, as well as Bojonegoro Regency in East Java. “In 2024, Sampoerna has been operating in Indonesia for 111 years. Since its inception, we have consistently realized our commitment to play an active role in encouraging national economic growth,” added Elvira.

The owner of PT Attin Sigaret Indonesia, Sri Yatin, said that the majority of the rollers at his place come from villages and areas around the factory in Karanganyar. According to him, there are also many workers who are in the new workforce immediately working after completing junior high or high school education.

“We also hope that the presence of MPS Jaten will bring benefits to the surrounding community because I see that many restaurants and new businesses have started around the factory. We hope this will be a positive interaction and have a double economic impact,” concluded Sri. (RO/P -3)
