The Karlsruhe company Ineratec has started construction of the first large-scale industrial power-to-liquid (PtL) plant in Frankfurt. From 2024, up to 2500 tons of sustainable e-fuels are to be produced annually in the Höchst district.

Supported by the environmental innovation program, Ineratec is investing over 30 million euros in the plant in which liquid hydrocarbons, so-called e-fuels, are produced from the raw materials CO2 and green hydrogen. The Industriepark Höchst offers optimal production conditions due to the existing infrastructure and a biogas plant from Infraserv Höchst. “As a company, we have recognized that Power-to-X technologies must be deployed in global sweet spots that offer optimal conditions in the form of cheap renewable electricity,” says Ineratec CEO Tim Böltken. “The pioneering plant in Frankfurt is a milestone in the development of sustainable e-fuel.”

The pioneer plant is the first large-scale industrial PtL project in Germany. The system modules have been manufactured in Karlsruhe since the summer of 2022 and will be gradually integrated at the site over the coming months. The commissioning process is scheduled to begin at the end of the year, and the start of production for the entire system is scheduled for 2024. Further systems are planned. (awm)
