On June 18, 2023, the people of Geneva will be called upon to vote on initiative 185 entitled “For a temporary solidarity contribution on large fortunes”. From an international point of view, the wealth tax looks like a living fossil, which only survives in a handful of OECD countries, including Norway, Spain and Switzerland. Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Sweden and Denmark have abolished it over the past two decades. Even France scrapped it in 2017, following losing around 60,000 millionaires between 2000 and 2016.
