A goose that was found seriously injured in the Leopoldskron outdoor pool in the city of Salzburg on May 5, 2023 was not abused by an animal abuser as originally assumed.
The now euthanized bird was bitten by a dog. This is the result of the examination of the animal’s body by the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna.
The preliminary proceedings against an unknown perpetrator on suspicion of animal cruelty and on suspicion of encroachment on foreign hunting or fishing rights have been discontinued, as the Salzburg public prosecutor informed in a broadcast on Tuesday.
Three swab samples were collected from the wound edges and from the area of the goose’s deeper skeletal muscle lesion and sent to the Research Institute of Wildlife and Ecology for genetic analysis. “The samples each contained DNA that could be clearly assigned to a dog,” explained prosecutor spokeswoman Elena Haslinger. A human as the cause of the injuries can be ruled out.
Passers-by sounded the alarm on May 5 when they saw the severely wounded but still alive water bird. Feathers and scraps of skin found nearby hinted at the animal’s martyrdom. The goose could no longer be helped by animal rescue either.
