In the 2nd Bundesliga, Hamburger SV deservedly defeated SpVgg Greuther Fürth and demonstrated their own strength at home. The downside: The HSV players Ludovit Reis, Ignace Van Der Brempt and Jean-Luc Dompé had to leave the field injured.

On Saturday (October 21, 2023), Hamburg won their fifth win in their fifth home game with a 2-0 (2-0). And also kept a clean sheet in front of the home crowd for the fourth time in a row. The goals were scored by Jonas Meffert (16th) and Robert Glatzel (45th + 4).

“We showed from the start that we wanted to win. We had good energy, were immediately involved and very present,” said HSV coach Tim Walter. With the three points, Hamburg is now level in the table with city rivals and league leaders St. Pauli (both 20 points), but has the worse goal difference.

Two early injuries at HSV

HSV started the game at a good pace. Fürth had difficulties, there was a lack of precision in their own build-up play. The hosts were slowed down a bit by an early treatment break. Rice was examined on the sideline. During a close duel, he hit his shoulder against the Fürth drinks crate – and had to go down; Immanuel Pherai came on for him (15th).

Van Der Brempt had also left the field with an injury during Reis’ treatment break and was replaced by Moritz Heyer.

Hamburg wide awake after a long interruption

But these early setbacks did not deter HSV. Immediately after the break, Hamburg took a corner and Laszlo Bénes’ sharp cross was headed in by Meffert. Even after that, coach Tim Walter’s team set the tone, winning two thirds of the duels. In the long added time, Glatzel made it 2-0.

Fürth didn’t have enough ideas in their own ball possession phases and sometimes lacked the courage to take risks. Compelling goal area scenes were therefore in short supply. However, HSV was also lucky twice in the first half: Simon Asta didn’t hit the ball correctly when he had a great chance (45th+6). Bakery Jatta also only received a yellow card for a rude foul on Asta (38th). Despite seeing the pictures, referee Robert Schröder left it at that.

Fürth’s Hrgota misses a penalty and Dompé also goes down

SpVgg coach Alexander Zorniger then seemed to have addressed a few things emphatically in the dressing room. After the restart, Fürth played much more courageously, HSV gave the “clover leaves” a little more space in midfield.

This resulted in a more balanced game at times, although Hamburg remained much more dangerous in the attacking third. This underlined great opportunities for Jatta (46th), Dompé (68th) – who was the third Hamburg player to be replaced due to injury (76th) – and Glatzel (83rd, 84th), who also had a goal disallowed for offside ( 78.).

This year Fernandes saves Fürth’s penalty

The game might have taken a different turn if Fürth’s attacker Branimir Hrgota hadn’t missed HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes from the penalty spot (72′).

After a corner, Damian Michalski’s header went just past the post (75′). In the end, the victory for Hamburg was deserved. It was a bitter defeat for Fürth: “We weren’t as brave as we could and should have been,” said Fürth coach Alexander Zorniger.
