It only took two or three days for an inmate in Mons prison to manage, using, according to one source, a spoon and a fork, to pierce a slab in his cell and dig a hole “enough to pass through a woman or a man of average build”, once more according to this source.

Thanks to the vigilance of the guards, the man was finally apprehended in a room, apparently a cellar, under his cell this Wednesday. The Prison Administration confirms the escape attempt. The Mons public prosecutor’s office was notified, “as we do with each attempt even if an escape attempt is not an offense unless it caused damage to property or to a person”, specifies spokesperson Valérie Callebaut .

This breakthrough was achieved by the inmate during this week’s two-day strike (Monday and Tuesday) in prisons. “A priori, it does not seem that this context might have favored this attempt in terms of surveillance or searches but an investigation is underway”, further specifies Valérie Callebaut. “That said, we know that, during this strike, the suppression of visits and outings to the courtyard caused tension among the prisoners.”
